China Launches Satellite Integrating 5G NTN, AI Edge Computing, and Laser Comms

China successfully launched the Pengcheng Nanke-1 satellite, marking the country's first orbital integration of a 5G Non-Terrestrial Network (NTN) base station, core network, on-orbit AI computing, and 100Gbps laser communications. Developed jointly by GalaxySpace, Pengcheng Laboratory, and Southern University of Science and Technology, the 150kg payload aims to validate integrated sensing, computing, and communications capabilities in space. By deploying core network infrastructure and edge AI processing directly into orbit, remote sensing data can be processed on-satellite in real time rather than requiring raw imagery to be downlinked to Earth. This significantly cuts data latency and downlink bandwidth usage while helping lay the technical foundation for space-air-ground integrated 6G networks. The satellite carries three primary payloads: a 3GPP-compliant 5G NTN payload, a 100Gbps high-speed space-to-ground laser communications module, and a digital retina on-orbit computing payload. In scenario applications like disaster response, the satellite can autonomously analyze thermal images, identify fire boundaries, and stream actionable analytics directly to user terminals over Ka-band.

## BACKGROUND

5G Non-Terrestrial Networks (NTN) is an extension of 5G specifications defined by 3GPP to provide mobile coverage directly via satellites and airborne platforms. Digital retina systems (such as IEEE Std 3161) define standards for visual feature extraction and edge computation, enabling efficient stream processing across cameras, edge compute nodes, and central networks.
