China Launches Gravity-1 Y4 Rocket; Satellites Return AI-Processed Images in 1.5 Hours
China successfully launched the Gravity-1 Y4 commercial rocket carrying nine satellites, including the Dongpo 13 and 14 optical satellites. Equipped with advanced on-board AI payloads, these two satellites successfully returned their first high-resolution remote sensing images just 1.5 hours after separating from the rocket. This achievement demonstrates the normalization of rapid satellite imaging and transmission workflows, significantly reducing the time from launch to operational status. Integrating edge AI directly onto satellites enables real-time data processing, which is crucial for time-sensitive applications like disaster response and environmental monitoring. The Dongpo 13 and 14 satellites completed a full closed-loop process including attitude stabilization, in-orbit self-check, imaging, and transmission within the 1.5-hour window. The Gravity-1 rocket, developed by Orienspace, is the world's largest all-solid-fuel launch vehicle, capable of carrying 4.2 tons to a 500 km sun-synchronous orbit.
## BACKGROUND
Traditional remote sensing satellites typically transmit raw data back to Earth for processing, which can introduce significant delays due to bandwidth and ground station availability. On-board AI processing, or edge AI in space, allows satellites to filter, compress, and analyze data in orbit, transmitting only the most relevant high-value information. Gravity-1 is a medium-lift solid-propellant rocket designed by the Chinese private aerospace company Orienspace to meet the demand for rapid, large-scale satellite constellation deployments.
