China Briefs UN on 2026 World AI Conference and New Cooperation Organization

China's permanent mission to the UN held a briefing for the 2026 World AI Conference (WAIC), highlighting the official signing of an agreement by 29 founding nations to establish the World AI Cooperation Organization (WAICO). Headquartered in Shanghai, WAICO aims to foster global AI governance and cooperation, particularly with the Global South. The establishment of WAICO represents a significant step by China to shape global AI standards and governance, positioning itself as a leader for the Global South in AI development. This initiative could serve as a geopolitical counterweight to Western-led AI governance frameworks and initiatives. The 2026 WAIC, scheduled for July 17–20 in Shanghai, will feature over 4,400 exhibits, 351 product debuts, and a new academic segment to bridge research and industry. Representatives from over 70 countries and international organizations attended the UN briefing, indicating broad interest in the initiative.
