Capcom Unveils REX Plan to Upgrade RE Engine for the AI Era

Capcom announced plans during its RE:2026 conference to upgrade its proprietary RE Engine through the phased REX project, incorporating AI capabilities for code generation, playtesting, and debugging. Rather than building a new engine from scratch, Capcom will evolve the existing RE Engine to streamline development workflows and reduce tedious tasks. As AAA game development costs and production schedules continue to escalate, embedding AI tools directly into game engine workflows could significantly reduce friction for large engineering teams. This move reflects a broader industry trend where game studios are leveraging AI to automate time-consuming, repetitive tasks rather than replacing core creative art assets. The REX initiative will standardize the RE Engine using widely adopted programming languages, making the underlying code readable and writable for both human programmers and AI models. Capcom programmer Satoshi Ishida highlighted that the project targets runtime efficiency, performance, dev tools, and quality assurance to suit massive team sizes.

## BACKGROUND

RE Engine (Reach for the Moon Engine) is Capcom's proprietary software engine introduced in 2017 with Resident Evil 7: Biohazard to replace its legacy MT Framework engine. Designed for high-fidelity graphics and fast loading times, it has since powered major titles including Devil May Cry 5, Monster Hunter Rise, and Street Fighter 6.
