ByteDance's Seed Establishes China's First Dedicated AI Safety and Alignment Department
ByteDance's AI lab Seed has established a dedicated 'Seed Model-Alignment & Preparedness' department, becoming China's first frontier AI laboratory to form a standalone unit for safety and alignment. This move highlights a growing industry focus on mitigating severe risks from advanced artificial intelligence and autonomous agents, such as unexpected behavioral drifts and CBRN threats. Led by Yan Lin and reporting to Seed head Wu Yonghui, the new department absorbs members from the previous Responsible AI team and parts of the Chat team to enhance agent model safety and guard against frontier capabilities risks.
## BACKGROUND
AI alignment is the research field focused on steering AI systems toward human intentions, values, and safety constraints to prevent unintended or harmful behaviors. As AI models evolve into autonomous agents capable of complex tasks, ensuring they remain controllable and safe has become a critical challenge for the industry.
