ByteDance's Doubao Team Accelerates Personal AI Agent Product Codenamed 'Spell'

ByteDance's Doubao team is accelerating the rollout of a personal AI agent product, originally codenamed 'Spell' during internal testing in April. The upcoming product will combine smartphone assistant capabilities with Doubao's primary conversational AI platform. This move highlights the industry-wide push toward proactive, consumer-focused AI agents that assist with daily tasks beyond basic chatbot interactions. By expanding its phone assistant technology into a standalone personal assistant, ByteDance seeks to compete directly with emerging global personal AI products like Meta's Muse and Instinct AI. The project originated from the Doubao mobile phone assistant team, which previously integrated agent features directly onto Nubia smartphone hardware. The new product will be jointly developed by the Spell team and the main Doubao chat team to deliver personal agent features to a broader audience.
