BYD Begins Mass Production of Xuanji A3, China's First Automotive-Grade 4nm Chip
BYD announced that its self-developed Xuanji A3, China's first automotive-grade 4nm autonomous driving chip supporting L3 and L4 driving capabilities, has officially entered mass production. Executive Li Qian emphasized that BYD will continue expanding its semiconductor investments, leveraging its existing catalog of 567 automotive chip products across 5 wafer fabs. This milestone highlights BYD's position as the world's only automaker with end-to-end semiconductor design and manufacturing capabilities for advanced autonomous driving hardware. It strengthens BYD's supply chain resilience while enabling tight integration between in-house algorithms and custom chips. A three-chip configuration of the Xuanji A3 delivers over 2,100 TOPS of computing power, achieving a 100% boost in compute utilization when paired with BYD's proprietary algorithms. BYD covers the full chip development lifecycle across seven stages, from architecture design to wafer fabrication, packaging, and testing.
## BACKGROUND
Automotive-grade chips must satisfy strict reliability and durability standards, such as AEC-Q100 certification, to operate continuously under extreme thermal and mechanical stress. High-level autonomous driving (L3/L4) requires immense computing power, measured in TOPS (Tera Operations Per Second), to process complex real-time sensor data from cameras, radar, and LiDAR.
