Beijing Engineer Sentenced to Five Years for Deleting 89TB of AI Model Data
A Beijing court has finalized the city's first criminal case involving the destruction of AI models, sentencing algorithm engineer Wang to five years and ten months in prison. Wang executed a forced-deletion command that ran for over 17 hours, destroying 89TB of data, including proprietary text-to-3D AI models, rendering models, and training data. This case sets a significant legal precedent in China regarding the criminal liability of developers and engineers who maliciously delete company data and AI assets. It highlights the growing legal recognition of AI models and training datasets as critical corporate property protected under computer information system security laws. The deletion targeted the company's AI game department's folder on an older server cluster, paralyzing the model training system and halting research projects. In addition to prison time, Wang was ordered to compensate the company for economic losses exceeding 204,000 RMB.
## BACKGROUND
Text-to-3D AI models and rendering models are advanced machine learning systems used to generate 3D digital assets and photorealistic images from text prompts or sketches. Training these models requires massive datasets and high-performance computing clusters, making the loss of training data and model weights extremely costly for AI development companies.
