Austria Rolls Out GovGPT AI Platform Using Mistral and Open WebUI

Austria is launching "GovGPT," a sovereign AI platform designed for up to 250,000 public sector employees, powered by Mistral open-weight models and the Open WebUI interface. The platform runs locally on the country's federal datacenter (BRZ) infrastructure. This deployment represents one of the largest government implementations of open-weight AI models, demonstrating that public sectors can leverage open-source tools to maintain data sovereignty and reduce reliance on foreign tech giants. It validates the viability of open-source LLMs in highly regulated, secure environments. The platform will support tasks such as document chat, internal knowledge base queries, electronic-file analysis, and parliamentary requests, with plans to eventually integrate autonomous agentic workflows. It is hosted entirely on Austria's federal datacenter (BRZ) to ensure strict data privacy and compliance.

## BACKGROUND

Sovereign AI refers to national efforts to build independent AI infrastructure and models to reduce dependence on foreign technology providers and ensure local data control. Open WebUI is a self-hosted, extensible web interface designed to run entirely offline, making it ideal for secure environments when paired with open-weight models like those from Mistral.
