Astera Labs Releases Orion Compute-Agnostic Rack Architecture

Astera Labs has introduced Orion, a modular and compute-agnostic rack reference architecture that allows users to flexibly combine diverse CPU and AI hardware. Scheduled to ship in Q1 2027, the platform includes six production-grade reference designs ranging from compute trays to switch boards. This architecture addresses major connectivity bottlenecks at the rack scale by offering component flexibility and freedom to swap or upgrade hardware. It provides a viable, open-standard alternative for data centers navigating hardware shortages and evolving AI workloads. Orion is powered by Astera Labs' 320-lane PCIe switch, ensuring low-latency communication and scalable memory capacity across racks and pods. Each pod can support up to 160 accelerators to deliver exceptional token throughput performance.

## BACKGROUND

PCIe (Peripheral Component Interconnect Express) is a high-speed interface standard used to connect high-performance components like GPUs, storage drives, and network cards to a computer's motherboard. In data centers, PCIe switches and retimers help route signals and overcome signal integrity issues across large-scale racks.
