Artificial Analysis v5 and the Benchmark Dilemma
Artificial Analysis has launched version 5 of its Intelligence Index, representing its most significant update since January by shifting 60% of the composite measure to private test sets and held-out answers. This update highlights the growing challenges and evolution of the AI benchmarking industry as evaluation platforms strive to prevent model optimization and accurately measure real-world capabilities. The new v5 index aggregates nine challenging evaluations across math, science, coding, and reasoning, placing models like Anthropic's Claude Opus 5.5 at the top while revealing open-weights models falling further behind.
## BACKGROUND
LLM benchmarking is the process of evaluating the performance, accuracy, and capabilities of large language models using standardized tests. Maintaining objective benchmarks has become increasingly difficult due to data contamination, where models inadvertently train on test questions.
