ARIA Bans Fully AI-Generated Songs from Official Australian Music Charts
The Australian Recording Industry Association (ARIA) has banned fully AI-generated songs from entering its official music charts and the ARIA Music Awards. This decision follows the chart success of an AI-generated remix of Madonna's "Like a Prayer," which reached number two on the Australian singles chart. This policy represents a significant step by a major national music body to protect human artists' livelihoods and intellectual property against unauthorized generative AI. It aligns with broader global music industry efforts, such as the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry's (IFPI) guidelines, to prioritize human creativity. Under the new rules, eligible songs must feature significant human contribution, such as being written, performed, or sung by humans, and any AI tools used must be legally trained. AI-assisted music remains eligible for the charts as long as human creators retain primary creative control.
