Arcee AI and US DOE Announce Genesis-Science-1, a 1T Open-Weight Model
Arcee AI and the US Department of Energy (DOE) have announced the development of Genesis-Science-1 (GS1), a trillion-parameter-class open-weight AI model designed for scientific research. Scheduled for release later this year, GS1 is built on Arcee's next-generation Trinity models and will include public weights, a technical report, and demonstrations. This partnership provides American scientific institutions with a highly capable, locally runnable alternative to closed APIs and foreign open-weight models, ensuring data privacy and long-term stability. It marks a significant milestone in open-source AI, bringing massive scale to specialized scientific computing. GS1 will be paired with a governed execution system to handle complex, long-running scientific tasks. While Arcee AI manages the compute, training, and system infrastructure, DOE scientists will supply the training data, define the research problems, and validate the model's outputs.
## BACKGROUND
The DOE's Genesis Mission is a national initiative aimed at accelerating scientific discovery by connecting supercomputers, experimental facilities, and advanced AI models. An open-weight model differs from a fully open-source model because while its learned parameters (weights) are publicly downloadable and runnable, the training code and datasets may not be fully disclosed.
