Apple Watch Rumored to Feature 'Live Rewind' On-Device Audio Transcription

Apple is reportedly planning to introduce a 'Live Rewind' feature for future Apple Watch models powered by the S11 chip. The feature allows users to double-click the Digital Crown to view text transcriptions of the previous 15 seconds of audio. This feature demonstrates Apple's effort to integrate practical on-device AI while maintaining strict privacy standards through hardware-isolated security. By requiring mandatory audio and visual alerts during activation, Apple aims to deliver convenient real-time audio recall without enabling covert recording. Audio data is processed entirely within a hardware-isolated 'Secure Exclave' on the S11 chip, and un-saved transcripts are automatically deleted 30 seconds after the display dims. To prevent unauthorized recording, activating the feature plays an audible tone—even when muted or connected to headphones—and displays full-screen visual indicators.

## BACKGROUND

Apple introduced the Secure Exclave privacy architecture starting with devices like the M4 iPad Pro and A18-equipped iPhones to isolate sensitive sensor processing from the main operating system. This design prevents applications, users, or even compromised system processes from bypassing hardware security controls or directly reading raw microphone and camera data.
