Apple Unveils New Mac Studio with M5 Max and M5 Ultra Chips

Apple has announced the new Mac Studio powered by M5 Max and M5 Ultra chips, featuring a next-generation PCIe Gen 6 storage architecture. The updated desktop computer also boasts up to 1.2TB/s of memory bandwidth to handle demanding workloads. This release marks the debut of PCIe Gen 6 storage in consumer-facing personal computers, significantly boosting data transfer speeds. The massive memory bandwidth and chip upgrades make it a powerful workstation for running large language models locally. The system supports up to 1.2TB/s internal memory bandwidth and high-speed external connectivity via Thunderbolt 5 at 120Gb/s. However, high memory configurations remain extremely expensive, with 256GB of memory reportedly costing around $10,000.

## BACKGROUND

PCIe (Peripheral Component Interconnect Express) is a high-speed interface standard used to connect motherboard components like SSDs and GPUs. Each new generation of PCIe typically doubles the bandwidth of the previous one, with PCIe Gen 5 offering speeds up to 14,000 MB/s for top-tier drives. However, faster storage standards often generate significant heat, raising concerns about thermal management in compact devices.
