Apple Unveils Mac Studio with M5 Max/Ultra and 512GB Unified Memory

Apple has announced new Mac Studio desktop computers powered by the M5 Max and M5 Ultra chips. These new models support up to 512GB of unified memory, significantly increasing the capacity for local hardware setups. The expansion to 512GB of unified memory allows developers and researchers to run massive AI models, such as 400B+ parameter LLMs, locally on a single desktop machine. This reduces the reliance on expensive cloud infrastructure or complex multi-GPU setups. The unified memory architecture allows the GPU to access model weights directly from the same memory pool as the CPU, eliminating data transfer bottlenecks. Additionally, the hardware refresh addresses the growing trend of users clustering or daisy-chaining multiple Macs for distributed AI inference.

## BACKGROUND

Apple Silicon chips utilize a Unified Memory Architecture (UMA) where the CPU and GPU share a single pool of high-bandwidth memory. This design is highly advantageous for Large Language Models (LLMs), which require vast amounts of VRAM to store model weights during inference. Previously, running very large models locally required clustering multiple machines or purchasing enterprise-grade GPUs.
