Apple Reportedly Developing M-Series Ultra Servers for AI Workloads
Apple is reportedly developing custom enterprise servers powered by its M-series Ultra chips to handle AI workloads, targeting a launch around 2029. If released, this would mark Apple's first dedicated enterprise server hardware product in decades. Building custom AI server hardware allows Apple to reduce reliance on third-party cloud providers and chipmakers like Nvidia for its cloud-side AI processing. It demonstrates Apple's long-term strategy to maintain tight control over its end-to-end hardware and software infrastructure for private AI operations. The reported timeline sets the launch for 2029, indicating the project is in its early stages and specifications could evolve significantly. The servers are expected to leverage Apple's Ultra-tier chips, which combine multiple dies to provide exceptionally high unified memory bandwidth suited for large language models.
## BACKGROUND
Apple previously exited the server hardware market in 2011 after discontinuing its Xserve product line. To power high-end chips like the M1 Ultra, Apple developed UltraFusion, an interconnect packaging technology created with TSMC that links two chip dies with massive inter-processor bandwidth.
