Apple Opens Siri AI App Skills for Cross-App Workflows

Apple is introducing 'App Skills' to allow third-party developers to integrate their apps with Siri, enabling complex multi-step tasks across different applications. This feature is scheduled to roll out in upcoming system updates such as iOS and macOS. This update marks a significant shift for Siri from responding to isolated, single-app commands to intelligently coordinating continuous workflows across multiple apps. It greatly expands the ecosystem utility of third-party applications by making them seamlessly callable through natural language requests. Users can now chain actions together, such as finding a saved item in a chat app and sending it to a contact, or contextually modifying actions without explicitly naming the target app when a live activity is active. These capabilities are currently rolling out to developers in testing phases.

## BACKGROUND

App Intents is an Apple framework that allows developers to expose their app's content and actions to system experiences like Siri, Shortcuts, and widgets. Historically, Siri has relied on limited pre-set integrations and SiriKit extensions, but recent advancements in AI integration aim to allow more dynamic handling of user requests.
