Anthropic Upgrades Claude Code and Cowork with Background Mac Control
Anthropic has updated Claude Cowork and Claude Code on macOS 15+, allowing the AI agent to perform clicks, text inputs, and navigation in the background while users work on other tasks. The update enables multitasking without requiring the AI to take over the user's active screen. This development solves a major usability barrier of AI computer control, which previously locked users out of using their screen during execution. By running tasks asynchronously in the background, Anthropic moves closer to turning AI agents into practical, always-on desktop collaborators. The background control feature requires macOS 15 or higher, an active display, and the running Claude Desktop app. It is currently limited to Pro and Max individual subscribers, while the Linux version remains in beta without computer control features.
## BACKGROUND
Anthropic previously introduced computer control capabilities allowing Claude models to interpret screen interfaces, type text, and click buttons like a human operator. Claude Code focuses on automated software development tasks in terminal and IDE environments, while Claude Cowork handles document generation, research, and general knowledge work.
