Anthropic Unifies Claude's Memory Across Cowork and Chat Features
Anthropic has updated Claude's memory mechanism to unify context management between its Cowork and chat features. This allows Claude Cowork to access information remembered from user chats, and vice versa, across web, desktop, and mobile platforms. This update improves user experience by eliminating the need to repeatedly explain background information, ensuring better continuity when switching between chat and multi-step agentic tasks. The unified memory feature is enabled by default for Free, Pro, and Max users, but memory regarding sensitive topics like health status or personal beliefs remains disabled by default unless manually turned on. Mobile users on iOS and Android must update their apps to the latest version to access this feature.
## BACKGROUND
Claude Cowork is an agentic tool by Anthropic designed to execute complex, multi-step tasks on behalf of the user, such as generating documents or spreadsheets. Previously, Claude's memory tool allowed the AI to store and retrieve information across conversations, but this update bridges the gap between conversational chat and agentic workflows.
