Anthropic Signs $10B Compute Deal with Startup Volta Infra Holdings

AI safety and research company Anthropic has signed a six-year, $10 billion compute procurement agreement with Volta Infra Holdings, a newly founded infrastructure startup. The compute will be powered by a hydro-powered data center in Norway deploying Nvidia's next-generation Vera Rubin AI chips. This massive deal highlights the escalating scale of capital commitments in the AI sector and the growing trend of securing long-term hardware resources. It also underscores the rising importance of sustainable energy sources, like hydropower, to meet the massive electricity demands of next-generation AI chips. The compute capacity will reach 133 megawatts (MW) and be fully delivered by March 2027 at a facility operated by Bitdeer Technologies. Alongside the deal, Volta raised $300 million in venture funding at a $2.4 billion valuation and established a $5 billion financing program to help clients purchase expensive AI chips.
