Anthropic's Flagship Fable 5 Model Sees Low Enterprise Adoption Amid Shift to Cheaper AI
Data from payment platform Ramp reveals that Anthropic's most powerful and expensive model, Fable 5, accounts for only 11% of total enterprise AI spending two months after its launch. Businesses are increasingly opting for cheaper alternatives, including Anthropic's own Opus 5 and OpenAI's GPT 5.6. This shift challenges the high-spending business model of frontier AI labs, which invest billions in training massive models under the assumption that clients will always demand the highest intelligence. It suggests that "good enough" models are sufficient for most business needs, potentially impacting Anthropic's upcoming IPO valuation. Fable 5's adoption was also hindered by temporary US government restrictions in June due to national security concerns. Meanwhile, Anthropic's cheaper Opus 5 model has already surpassed Fable 5 in enterprise spending since late July, and OpenAI's GPT 5.6 is also priced significantly lower than Fable 5.
## BACKGROUND
Frontier AI models represent the state-of-the-art in artificial intelligence, requiring massive datasets and compute power to train, which can cost hundreds of millions of dollars. Anthropic is an AI safety and research company known for its Claude series of large language models, with Fable 5 being its latest flagship offering designed for complex knowledge work and coding.
