Anthropic Restricts Claude Code from Replicating Existing Games
Anthropic has updated its Claude Code tool to prevent the Opus 5.5 model from helping users replicate specific existing games. The system now enforces a prompt-level rule blocking clones of specific titles, even if renamed or branded as original. This update marks a significant proactive step by AI developers to address intellectual property and copyright concerns in AI-assisted coding. It sets a precedent for how coding assistants handle proprietary commercial assets. Anthropic technical member Addy Osmani confirmed that two guiding lines were added to the Opus 5.5 prompts for Claude Code. Original games, genre-based projects, and designs using user-owned assets remain fully permitted.
## BACKGROUND
Claude Code is a terminal-based coding agent developed by Anthropic that leverages their Claude series of large language models to assist with software development tasks. Anthropic models are trained using constitutional AI techniques to improve ethical and legal compliance.
