Anthropic Redesigns Source Control to Handle 30,000 Daily AI Code Merges
Anthropic built a custom source control system named Scion and a review system called Antique to handle a massive surge in AI-driven code merges, which jumped from 2,500 to over 30,000 per day between May and September 2026. A team of seven engineers completed the migration away from Git in just five months. This shift highlights a fundamental engineering bottleneck as generative AI and autonomous agents drastically scale up code production, forcing companies to move beyond traditional distributed version control systems like Git. It signals a new era where software engineering infrastructure must be reinvented to support agentic coding workflows. Anthropic's main branch history alone spans almost 100 GB with a compressed working copy exceeding 25 GB, driving roughly 25 million code checkouts daily for CI, agent sandboxes, and research jobs. Naively using Git would have resulted in over 600 PB of network traffic per day.
## BACKGROUND
A monorepo is a software development strategy where the source code for multiple distinct projects is stored in a single repository, which Google, Meta, and other large tech companies use to manage massive codebases. Traditional distributed version control systems like Git struggle when repositories and checkout volumes grow to the extreme scales required by modern AI agent workflows.
