Anthropic Launches Model Hardware Standard for Physical AI and Robotics

Anthropic has released the Model Hardware Standard (MHS) in research preview, establishing a unified control and communication protocol for AI agents to interact with physical devices. This marks the company's first public move into the fields of embodied and physical AI. By standardizing how AI agents interface with physical machinery, MHS could significantly accelerate automation in fields like biotechnology, quantum computing, and advanced manufacturing. It bridges the gap between digital AI models and physical hardware, reducing integration complexity. Similar to Anthropic's Model Context Protocol (MCP) for digital data, MHS acts as a translation layer for programmable hardware interfaces. In early testing, pharmaceutical giant Genentech used MHS to automate dose-response curve experiments, cutting development and execution time to one-third.

## BACKGROUND

Traditional AI operates primarily in digital environments, processing text, images, or code. Physical AI (or embodied AI) integrates AI with physical bodies, such as robotic arms, autonomous vehicles, or lab equipment, allowing them to perceive and interact with the real world.
