Anthropic introduces Model Hardware Standard for AI control of physical devices
Anthropic has announced the Model Hardware Standard (MHS), a new standardized driver interface designed to let AI agents communicate with and control physical hardware. The company is opening a research preview of MHS to select scientific research labs and advanced manufacturers. This standard bridges the gap between large language models and physical machinery, potentially accelerating the integration of AI in robotics, laboratory automation, and industrial manufacturing. By establishing a unified interface, it simplifies how AI developers interact with diverse hardware ecosystems. The Model Hardware Standard aims to provide a safe and shared specification, allowing devices to not only communicate with AI agents but also interact with each other. Currently, it is being rolled out as a research preview to gather feedback from early partners in research and manufacturing.
## BACKGROUND
Traditionally, controlling physical hardware with AI required custom, proprietary APIs and drivers for every specific machine, creating a fragmented development landscape. AI agents, which are autonomous systems capable of executing multi-step tasks, have struggled to interact seamlessly with physical environments due to this lack of standardization. A unified driver interface acts like a universal translator, similar to how USB standardized computer peripherals.
