Anthropic Establishes Operational Wet Lab to Advance AI-Driven Biological Research
Anthropic has established an operational wet lab in the San Francisco Bay Area to integrate its AI models directly into physical biological research workflows. Confirmed by Eric Kauderer-Abrams, Anthropic's head of life sciences, the facility will conduct internal research as well as joint experiments with external partners. This move marks a major strategic transition for AI labs from purely computational modeling to hands-on physical experimentation. It positions Anthropic to generate proprietary biological data for its AI models, though it also raises discussions around biosecurity risks given the company's past warnings about AI risks. The facility will focus on foundational biological research rather than direct drug discovery to avoid competing with pharmaceutical partners like Novo Nordisk and Sanofi. This follows Anthropic's $400 million acquisition of stealth AI biotech startup Coefficient Bio and the launch of its Life Sciences Verification Program.
