Anthropic Develops FlashProve to Cryptographically Verify AI Model Outputs
Anthropic is developing an open-source cryptographic system called FlashProve to mathematically verify which specific AI model generated a given output. The system provides verifiable proof of model identity without exposing proprietary model weights. This development addresses trust and accountability in AI services by preventing providers from secretly swapping cheaper models or manipulating benchmark results. It enables transparent verification that users are receiving responses from the exact models they paid for. FlashProve generates a model 'fingerprint' that can be matched against specific outputs, allowing local verification by users. While Anthropic has released initial technical specifications and open-source code on GitHub, deployment plans are not yet finalized.
## BACKGROUND
AI models rely heavily on proprietary internal parameters called weights, which companies protect as trade secrets to maintain competitive advantages. Verifying model outputs cryptographically without revealing these weights is a major challenge at the intersection of AI safety and applied cryptography.
