Anthropic Adds Apple CarPlay Support to Claude iOS App for Hands-Free Voice Interactions
Anthropic has updated its Claude iOS app to integrate with Apple CarPlay, enabling drivers to engage in hands-free voice conversations with the AI assistant through their vehicle's infotainment system. This update expands AI assistant accessibility into automotive environments, joining competitors like OpenAI's ChatGPT in bringing conversational AI directly to drivers on the road. Because CarPlay currently lacks support for third-party custom wake words, users must manually tap the Claude icon on the infotainment screen before initiating voice mode. Additionally, the app cannot control vehicle hardware or other iPhone functionalities.
## BACKGROUND
Apple CarPlay allows users to connect their iPhone to a car's built-in display to interact with supported applications while driving. Apple introduced framework support for third-party chatbot applications in CarPlay, requiring developers to adopt standardized voice interfaces and adhere to specific system permissions.
