AMD Unveils Threadripper Halo Station Workstation Capable of Running 1T+ Parameter AI Models
AMD has announced the Threadripper Halo Station, a liquid-cooled workstation powered by a 96-core Ryzen Threadripper PRO processor and dual Instinct MI350P AI accelerators. Designed as a personal supercomputer, the system supports 2TB of system memory and is built to run AI models with over one trillion parameters locally. This workstation brings data-center-class hardware capabilities directly to local developer setups, reducing reliance on cloud infrastructure for massive AI models. It demonstrates AMD's strategy to capture enterprise and developer demand for local LLM inference and fine-tuning using high-bandwidth memory hardware. All core compute components in the station feature liquid cooling to maintain optimal performance. Future iterations of the system will support up to four Instinct MI350P cards, bringing the total combined HBM3E memory to 576GB.
## BACKGROUND
Running large language models (LLMs) with hundreds of billions or trillions of parameters requires both massive memory capacity and ultra-high bandwidth to feed data into processor cores quickly. High Bandwidth Memory 3E (HBM3E) delivers the multi-terabyte-per-second memory transfer rates necessary for low-latency AI inference, which traditionally required enterprise data center clusters.
