AMD Unveils Helios AI Rack and Venice CPU, Partners with Anthropic
AMD has announced its new Helios server rack and Venice EPYC CPU, alongside a strategic partnership to supply Anthropic with up to 2 gigawatts of Instinct MI450 AI chips starting in 2027. The deal also includes a potential equity investment of up to $5 billion by AMD in Anthropic. This move positions AMD as a direct competitor to NVIDIA's dominant AI rack-scale solutions, securing major AI customers like Anthropic and OpenAI. It signals a shift from selling individual chips to providing complete, integrated data center infrastructure. The Helios rack is built on Meta's Open Rack Wide standard, while the Venice CPU (Zen 6) is manufactured on TSMC's 2nm process and offers up to 256 cores. The MI450 GPUs deployed in Helios racks are claimed to deliver up to 10x more performance than the previous MI355X.
## BACKGROUND
Modern AI workloads, especially large language models, require massive clusters of GPUs and CPUs working in tandem, leading chipmakers to design entire server racks rather than just individual processors.
