AMD Unveils AI and HPC Roadmap with Yearly GPUs and Biennial CPUs
At the Advancing AI 2026 conference, AMD announced its AI and HPC hardware roadmap, establishing a two-year release cycle for CPUs and a yearly cadence for GPUs. The plan includes the launch of Zen 7 EPYC CPUs in 2028, Zen 8 CPUs in 2030, Instinct MI500 GPUs in 2027, and Instinct MI600 GPUs in 2028. This structured roadmap provides cloud providers and enterprise customers with long-term predictability for planning next-generation data centers. By accelerating its GPU release cycle to a yearly cadence, AMD aims to keep pace with Nvidia's rapid AI hardware release schedule. The roadmap also details rack-scale solutions, featuring the Helios 500 system with MI500 GPUs and EPYC "Verano" CPUs, and the Helios 600 system combining MI600 GPUs with "Ferrara" CPUs and Pensando networking chips.
## BACKGROUND
AMD's EPYC line represents its high-performance server CPUs, while the Instinct series consists of GPU accelerators designed specifically for AI and high-performance computing (HPC) workloads. Additionally, AMD's Pensando acquisition provides data processing units (DPUs) and networking technologies to optimize data transfer speeds within these massive rack-scale AI systems.
