AMD Explains Why AI Made the Dual 3D V-Cache Ryzen 9 Viable

In a recent interview, AMD executive Travis Kirsch explained that while dual 3D V-Cache processors were initially not cost-effective for pure gaming, the growth of AI workloads made the Ryzen 9 9950X3D2 viable. This insight highlights how surging AI demands are shifting product development and hardware strategy, enabling high-end configurations that previously could not justify their cost based solely on traditional gaming performance. Kirsch noted that traditional games mostly utilize a single CCD, making dual 3D V-Cache inefficient for gaming alone, but software ecosystems and evolving AI requirements have justified the design.

## BACKGROUND

3D V-Cache is AMD's innovative technology that stacks additional L3 cache vertically onto the CPU die to significantly improve gaming performance. A CCD (Core Complex Die) is a modular building block containing processor cores, and high-end processors often feature multiple CCDs.
