AMD Acquires AI Chip Startup Taalas to Boost Inference Capabilities
AMD has acquired Toronto-based AI chip startup Taalas, which specializes in hardwired ASICs designed for deep learning models. AMD plans to integrate Taalas' technology into its accelerator roadmap and system-level solutions alongside AMD Instinct GPUs. This acquisition highlights a growing industry shift toward specialized ASICs to handle the high computational demands and energy costs of AI inference. By incorporating Taalas' technology, AMD aims to strengthen its enterprise AI platform and better compete with Nvidia in the rapidly growing inference market. Taalas' technology is designed to generate tokens at high speeds, though running large models typically requires chaining multiple chips together. The acquired technology will complement AMD's existing ecosystem, including Helios rackscale solutions, EPYC CPUs, and the ROCm software stack.
