Amazon Plans Texas Data Center Powered by Massive Natural Gas Plant
Amazon is planning to build a new data center in Pecos County, Texas, powered by an on-site natural gas power plant. The proposed plant has been permitted to emit up to 33 million tons of carbon dioxide annually, potentially making it the largest greenhouse gas emission source in the United States. This project highlights the growing conflict between the massive energy demands of AI infrastructure and the climate commitments of major tech companies. As AI workloads surge, companies like Amazon are increasingly relying on fossil fuels, threatening their goals to achieve net-zero carbon emissions. Amazon's carbon emissions already increased by 16% year-over-year last year due to the rise of AI. While an Amazon spokesperson stated the on-site plant will prevent local electricity prices from rising, it represents a significant shift from the company's 2040 net-zero carbon pledge.
