Amazon Issues First British Pound Bonds to Fund $220 Billion AI Capex Push

Amazon is preparing its first British pound-denominated bond issuance across four maturity tranches from 3 to 19 years to help finance its massive infrastructure expansion. Under CEO Andy Jassy, the company plans $220 billion in capital expenditures this year, with the majority dedicated to artificial intelligence projects. This move highlights how hyperscale cloud providers are tapping global debt markets to bankroll massive AI hardware and data center buildouts. However, growing investor fatigue over heavy tech debt issuances is forcing companies to offer higher credit spreads, pushing up borrowing costs. Amazon has become the largest bond issuer among cloud hyperscalers, accumulating over $92 billion in debt issuances and holding nearly double the total debt of its main rival, Microsoft. The bond deal is being managed by JPMorgan, Barclays, HSBC, and NatWest Group, following Amazon's previous record debt offerings in euros and Swiss francs.

## BACKGROUND

Hyperscalers are massive cloud computing providers—such as Amazon Web Services (AWS), Microsoft Azure, and Google Cloud—that manage global data center networks. Developing and running modern artificial intelligence models requires huge upfront capital expenditures (capex) on specialized hardware like GPUs, custom chips, advanced cooling, and high-power grid connections.
