Alibaba Q1 FY2027: Net Profit Drops 76% Despite Strong AI Cloud Growth
Alibaba reported its Q1 FY2027 financial results, showing a 9% year-over-year revenue increase to 268.95 billion RMB, but a 76% drop in net profit to 10.537 billion RMB. Concurrently, the company released its new open-weights flagship model, Qwen3.8-Max, which features 2.4 trillion parameters. The results highlight the massive financial toll of building AI infrastructure, as heavy capital expenditures dragged down profits despite surging demand for AI cloud services. However, the rapid growth of the Qwen model ecosystem and AI cloud revenue positions Alibaba as a dominant force in the AI market. Alibaba's capital expenditure surged 75% to 67.678 billion RMB, driven primarily by investments in AI infrastructure. Meanwhile, AI-related product revenue reached 12.376 billion RMB, marking its twelfth consecutive quarter of triple-digit year-over-year growth.
