Alibaba Chairman Joe Tsai Outlines Full-Stack AI Strategy and 5-Year Vision

Speaking at the Wave by Vento 2026 event in Italy, Alibaba Chairman Joe Tsai predicted that AI will become invisible, essential infrastructure integrated into every business sector within five years. He highlighted Alibaba's post-2023 strategic pivot to focus core operations on e-commerce and a full-stack AI framework spanning cloud compute, proprietary models, and enterprise applications. The strategy underlines how major tech giants are integrating hardware infrastructure, foundation models, and open-source ecosystems to capture a multi-trillion-dollar productivity market. Furthermore, Tsai emphasized China's competitive advantage in combining vast industrial manufacturing data with complete hardware supply chains for future physical AI applications such as electric vehicles and robotics. Tsai framed knowledge worker productivity as AI's most certain application scenario with an estimated total addressable market (TAM) of $50 trillion, while encouraging Europe to leverage open-source models on specialized neocloud compute infrastructure. Technically, Alibaba's full-stack AI relies on 17 years of Alibaba Cloud infrastructure experience driving proprietary large models for consumer and enterprise end-products.

## BACKGROUND

A full-stack AI architecture encompasses every layer of technology required to build and deploy AI systems, ranging from raw hardware compute accelerators and cloud infrastructure at the bottom to foundation models and end-user applications at the top. Meanwhile, a 'neocloud' refers to specialized cloud providers built specifically to serve GPU-heavy AI and high-performance computing workloads, contrasting with traditional general-purpose hyperscalers.
