AI System Deciphers Unread 1809 Napoleon Military Cipher in Six Hours
AI engineer Carter Church successfully deciphered an encrypted 1809 military letter written by Napoleon Bonaparte that had remained unread for over 200 years due to a missing codebook. Using an AI-driven pipeline combining vision analysis, statistical modeling, and simulated annealing, the decipherment was completed in about six hours. This accomplishment demonstrates how integrated AI workflows can automate complex historical cryptanalysis tasks that traditionally required months of labor from domain specialists across vision, linguistics, and mathematics. It highlights the potential of AI tools to rapidly analyze and unlock historical manuscript archives worldwide. The letter comprised 1,300 cipher units and 155 unique symbols representing both individual letters and full French words. The AI pipeline performed optical recognition to isolate symbols, evaluated symbol patterns against historical French literature, and ran simulated annealing to iteratively find the correct substitution key.
## BACKGROUND
A nomenclator cipher is a historical encryption scheme that blends letter-by-letter substitution with code words representing specific terms or names. Simulated annealing is a probabilistic optimization algorithm inspired by metallurgical heating and cooling, frequently applied in cryptanalysis to search large spaces of possible substitution keys.
