AI Short Drama Boom Drives Demand for Facial Likeness Licensing in China
China's booming AI short drama and digital advertising industries have spawned a market for "face licensing," allowing individuals to sell rights to their digital facial likenesses. Ordinary people earn around 100 RMB per video without acting in person, while professional actors charge between 500 and several thousand RMB depending on video length and scope. This trend illustrates how generative AI is democratizing content production and opening up novel monetization channels for everyday citizens. At the same time, the rapid adoption of digital humans is reshaping traditional media production by drastically lowering casting and filming overhead. Procurement platforms allow buyers to browse and select facial assets based on age, gender, and visual style, splitting revenue with licensors upon completion. According to DataEye research, China's AI short drama market exceeded 22 billion RMB in the first five months of the year, with AI-generated content accounting for over 95% of micro-short dramas launched in Q1.
## BACKGROUND
Micro-short dramas are fast-paced, vertical video episodes optimized for smartphone screens that have exploded in popularity across Chinese digital platforms. Generative AI and digital avatar technology allow producers to synthesize realistic human faces and voices, enabling fully digital cast production without requiring physical set shoots.
