AI Server Boom to Drive 31% Surge in Global Data Center Power Demand in 2026

TrendForce reports that accelerated AI server deployments will push global data center power demand capacity to 161 GW in 2026, representing a 31% year-over-year increase. AI servers alone are expected to account for 33.4% of total data center power demand capacity that year. This rapid consumption growth highlights an impending power supply bottleneck starting in 2026 as grid delivery capabilities fail to keep pace with data center expansion. The shortfall will force cloud service providers to rethink site selection, grid connectivity, and on-site energy infrastructure. By 2030, global data center power demand is projected to reach 490.7 GW against an estimated grid-delivered capacity of only 222.6 GW, creating a theoretical deficit of 268 GW. However, analysts note that this paper deficit will be partially offset by operators constructing behind-the-meter (BTM) self-generation power solutions.

## BACKGROUND

Grid deliverability refers to the power transmission network's capability to deliver electricity from power generation sources to high-demand end users without causing network congestion. Behind-the-meter (BTM) systems are on-site power generation or storage setups—such as gas turbines, solar arrays, or batteries—connected on the customer's side of the electricity meter, allowing facilities to supply their own power independently of main power grid expansion delays.
