AI Hedge Fund "Situational Awareness" Suffers Massive Liquidation, Shrinking to $10 Billion
Former OpenAI researcher Leopold Aschenbrenner's AI hedge fund, "Situational Awareness," suffered a massive liquidation, with its assets shrinking from $45 billion to $10 billion. The collapse was triggered by a drop in semiconductor stocks and margin calls on the fund's highly leveraged positions. This event underscores the extreme volatility and financial risks associated with the current AI investment boom, especially when combined with high leverage. It also highlights the challenges faced by prominent AI figures transitioning into complex financial markets without prior fund management experience. The fund reportedly utilized leverage of up to 400%, forcing Aschenbrenner to sell all leveraged positions in SK Hynix and CoreWeave to Citadel's Ken Griffin. Aschenbrenner had only recently launched the fund in July 2024 after raising an estimated $250 million in seed funding.
