AI-Driven Upgrades and Component Shortages Drive Up Consumer Electronics Prices in China
China's National Bureau of Statistics reported that AI-driven upgrades have boosted demand and prices for consumer electronics, with tablets, computers, and mobile phones rising by 11.3%, 5.5%, and 1.0% respectively in July. Major manufacturers like Apple, Xiaomi, and Huawei are raising device prices to cope with rising component costs. This trend highlights how the global AI infrastructure boom is directly impacting everyday consumers by straining the hardware supply chain. As chipmakers prioritize high-margin AI components, the resulting shortages of standard memory and storage are forcing consumer brands to pass costs onto buyers. Apple recently raised Mac and iPad prices due to unprecedented memory shortages, while executives from Xiaomi and Huawei warned that soaring memory costs are creating the most severe cost pressures in a decade. The price hikes are particularly impacting budget-friendly and mid-range devices that have less margin to absorb cost increases.
## BACKGROUND
The rapid expansion of AI data centers has led to an unprecedented demand for High Bandwidth Memory (HBM) and high-capacity enterprise SSDs. Because manufacturing HBM requires significantly more wafer capacity than standard DDR5 memory, chipmakers are shifting production lines away from commodity DRAM and NAND flash. This reduction in general-purpose memory supply has triggered steep price increases for the memory chips used in consumer devices.
