AI Data Centers Retrofit Retired Jet Engines to Bypass Grid Delays

Facing multi-year power grid connection delays, AI data center operators like xAI are retrofitting retired aircraft jet engines to burn natural gas for rapid on-site power generation. Companies such as xAI and Crusoe have adopted or ordered these modified turbine units to power large-scale artificial intelligence computing clusters. This trend highlights a severe infrastructure bottleneck where electricity supply critically trails the booming demand for AI data centers, forcing companies to seek off-grid solutions. Deploying repurposed jet engines allows operators to bring facilities online within 24 months, circumventing grid backlogs that stretch into the next decade. xAI has deployed eight converted jet engine turbines from ProEnergy for its Colossus 2 data center in Memphis, while other projects like OpenAI's Stargate in Texas have also explored gas turbine solutions. However, these retrofitted engines are less efficient and generate higher pollution compared to purpose-built power plant turbines, making them primarily a short-term workaround.

## BACKGROUND

Aeroderivative gas turbines are lightweight, highly responsive power generation units derived from commercial or military aircraft jet engines. Due to their fast-start capabilities and mobility, they are increasingly utilized by industries needing immediate, off-grid power generation when traditional electrical infrastructure cannot keep pace with demand.
