AI Data Center Energy Boom May Erase 15 Years of US Power Sector Emissions Reductions

A recent internal analysis by the Sierra Club reveals that the surge in fossil fuel-based power plant construction for AI data centers could push US power sector carbon dioxide emissions to 2.1 billion tons by 2030, increasing emissions by roughly 42% compared to 2025. This trend threatens to reverse hard-won environmental progress, potentially wiping out 15 years of greenhouse gas emission reductions in the US power sector as tech companies increasingly rely on natural gas to bypass grid connection delays. By 2030, off-grid power generation built independently by tech companies to power data centers could account for over 460 million tons of emissions, an amount roughly equivalent to Mexico's total annual emissions.

## BACKGROUND

The rapid expansion of artificial intelligence requires massive computational power, translating into unprecedented electricity demands for data centers. To avoid lengthy public grid connection queues, many developers opt to construct dedicated, fossil fuel-powered generation facilities nearby.
