AI Agent Successfully Plans and Executes Brain Surgery on a Mouse
Biotech startup Exin Therapeutics utilized the Anthropic Sonnet model and a robotic arm to autonomously select a gene therapy vector, determine brain coordinates from scientific literature, and inject medication to treat epilepsy in a mouse. This achievement represents a groundbreaking convergence of artificial intelligence, robotics, and biotechnology, demonstrating the potential for autonomous AI systems to perform complex medical interventions under human supervision. While the AI agent handled drug selection, coordinate derivation, and robotic injection of 250 nanoliters of medication, human surgeons performed the craniotomy and closure, and a veterinarian supervised the procedure with an emergency stop system in place.
## BACKGROUND
Gene therapy vectors are delivery tools, often engineered from inactivated viruses, used to safely transfer therapeutic genes into target cells. In neuroscience and biotechnology, precise intracranial injections require accurate spatial coordinates to target specific brain regions for treating disorders like epilepsy.
